I’ve got to think that being a designer these days is a tough gig. With the global nature of the economy, and the fact that most design work can be outsourced overseas, it’s tough for designers to differentiate themselves enough to get business at the rates they charge. Many survive simply due to the fact that most local business owners aren’t aware of these cheaper alternatives, however many larger companies with dedicated Internet divisions will know where to find such employees. Additionally, many SEO professionals know about this cheap labor market, and instead of hiring a local designer to create their affiliate sites or client sites, they’ll outsource the work to the Philippines or India.
